Quiet Emotion

‘Quiet Emotion’ depicts a face rendered in fine black lines against an off-white background. Almond-shaped eyes, an elongated nose and closed lips are indicated by a few flowing contours. Wavy lines run downwards along the right-hand side, whilst on the left part of the face falls outside the frame. Some outlines are drawn twice or intersect. The face remains recognisable, but is not fully rendered.

The illustration derives its character from the open space between the lines. The light background blends into the face, so that there is no sharp division between the subject and the surroundings. Round cheeks and lips contrast with the long, narrow nose. Alternating thin and slightly darker lines introduce subtle movement into the portrait. The asymmetrical cropping lends the simple motif a sense of tension without losing its tranquil feel.

This minimalist line art suits a modern or Scandinavian interior with neutral tones. In a living room, bedroom or hall, the portrait complements black, cream and light woods. A plain wall allows the delicate lines to stand out clearly. Thanks to its vertical format, the piece also works well as a focal point next to a cupboard or mirror. The understated colour palette allows it to be combined with other art, whilst the face retains a distinct presence in its own right.
