Poppy and poppy, flowers of the same family, but what is the difference between a poppy and a poppy?
The difference is mainly that a poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is native and annual. It often appears spontaneously and especially in loose-textured sandy soil.
The poppy (Papaver orientalis) is an Oriental poppy, which arises from plantlets or via sowing and is a perennial. It is definitely not the poppy that gets you high. This poppy is a commercial crop where blue poppy seeds are made for sandwiches, for pharmaceuticals and can be pressed for oil.
Then you have the Papaver somniferum nicknamed 'sleeping globe'. This species is the cause that many people look odd when you say you like poppies...... opium can be extracted from this bulb.
