The Old Harbour with the White House in Rotterdam in black and white. The White House is one of the first and tallest office buildings in Europe. The building was one of the few buildings in the city centre to survive the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. In the 1990s, as much of the building as possible was restored to its original state.
This photo also shows one of Rotterdam's oldest harbours. The Old Harbour with its classic barges. The current Willemsbrug can be seen in the background. The bridge was opened in 1981 by then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. A nice detail was that this was his first official operation in our city.
A second nice detail is that the current Willemsbrug is not the first bridge, but already the second under this name. Designed by C.B. van der Tak, the first bridge was opened in 1878 and named after King Willem III. The current second bridge was designed by Cor Veerling some 40 years back.
