A Final Farewell in a Tin by Retrotimes

This surreal and darkly humorous work plays with rituals, form and meaning in a way that is both unsettling and intriguing. In a classically furnished funeral parlour, rich in warm wood tones, candlelight and floral arrangements, a remarkable scene has unfolded: a group of elegantly dressed figures with fish heads gathers around an open tin of sardines serving as a coffin.

The setting is traditional and familiar – a farewell, a moment of silence and reflection – but the execution defies all expectations. Those present wear black suits, hats and mourning veils, their body language solemn and respectful. At the same time, the absurdity of their fish-like appearance and the choice of a metal tin as a final resting place creates a sharp contrast that gives the viewer pause for thought.

This work balances on the edge of satire and symbolism. It raises questions about transience, consumption and the rituals we take for granted. Is it a playful critique, a visual pun, or rather a deeper reflection on the human condition? The interpretation remains open, which gives the work a lasting appeal.

“Laatste Groet in Blik” is a bold artwork that isn’t afraid to provoke. Ideal for lovers of conceptual art with an edge and a sense of dark humour—a unique addition guaranteed to spark conversation.
