Hohensalzburg Fortress is the landmark of the city of Salzburg. It is located on a mountain above the city, the Festungsberg, which continues north-westwards into the Mönchsberg. The spur to the east of the fortress hill is called Nonnberg, on which the Benedictine abbey of Nonnberg is located directly below the eastern outskirts of the fortress - the Nonnberg bastions. Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest castle complexes in Europe, with a built-up area of over 7,000 m² (including the bastions of over 14,000 m²), dating back to the 11th century. As one of the largest fully preserved castles in Central Europe, it attracts over a million visitors a year, making it the most visited sight in Austria outside of Vienna, surpassed only by Schönbrunn Palace and Zoo and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in the Austrian capital
