About the artwork

Along the pond of Kasteel Vaeshartelt it is good to relax The history of the estate possibly goes back to the 10th century, when Queen Gerberga donated her possessions in Meerssen, including a wooded estate, to the Abbey of Reims. The name Vaeshartelt was first mentioned in 1381, when Servaes van Mulcken, alderman of Maastricht, acquired the Hartelt estate. He had a defendable farm built there, of which nothing remains today. From 1415 to 1668 the estate was in the possession of the Cortenbach family; after that the owners changed rapidly. In 1739 the present southeast wing of the castle was built by the then owner, Colonel Sturler of the Maastricht garrison. In 1805 the northeast wing was added, also called the "palace". During this period, a number of salons were also decorated in Empire style.

For me as a landscape painter, this estate gives extraordinary inspiration to search for compositions.
