About the artwork

The 1938 Dodge Airflow Tanker has been used at air fields to provide low-pressure gas to run heavy aircraft. This truck also pumped oil in the event of an emergency. Here's a look at the history of the Air Flow, how it got started and how it is used today. This article covers the basic background information on this particular Dodge Airflow Tanker.

The origin of air flow trucks dates back to 1938 when they were first created for the Army. It is believed that the invention of the air-flow truck was based off of the observation that gasoline, along with oil, were in great demand due to the start of World War 1. This supply shortage caused gasoline prices to skyrocket, which lead to the government creating huge stockpiles of gasoline in order to combat this problem. From this vantage point, the military realized that they needed a quick, easy, and low-cost way of supplying fuel to their troops and vehicles.

After the war ended, the military vehicles' fuel source dried up and they had to find new alternatives. That's where the idea for the airflow tanker came from. The vehicle was a simple but effective solution as a portable alternative to fueling via the use of crude oil. Today, Dodge Airflow Tumblers is still used by the military and other emergency services everywhere in the world.
