About "Dordrecht, Damiatebrug"

by Willem Woudenberg

About the artwork

The legendary Damiate bridge in Dordrecht. The Damiatebrug or Damiatenbrug is an iron bridge in the city of Dordrecht, in the Dutch province of South Holland. Since 1990, the bridge has been designated a national monument. The bridge was built over the Wolwevershaven and connects two quays, the Wolwevershaven and the Kuipershaven. The bridge's name was taken from the old wooden bridge previously located on that spot, which in turn came from the Damiate timber trade that stood nearby in the 17th century. The current double iron drawbridge was built in 1855 to the design of George Nicholas Itz. The Damiate bridge was opened in April 1855 but collapsed in May 1855 as the combination of cast and wrought iron proved too weak. By 1857, the bridge had been repaired, with most of the cast iron replaced with wrought iron. In 1964, the bridge was electrified, with a bridge length of 15 m. Source Wikipedia
