With a bright glow from the afterburner and a dull thud, the Royal Air Force's F-16 takes off from the runway. In this picture, you can see the grey fighter just coming off the ground, nose up, landing gear just barely retracted. The aircraft's matt grey tones contrast subtly with the background sky, while heat waves and condensation streaks behind the wings add strength to the moment. For me as a photographer, this is an image full of speed, precision and technical ingenuity. The F-16, for years the face of Dutch air defence, remains impressive to behold. Every take-off moment is a demonstration of power and control, captured in a split second.
