Franz Marc (Munich, 8 February 1880 - Braquis, 4 March 1916) was a German expressionist painter.
He concentrated mainly on animal portraits, trying to grasp the inner essence of the animal rather than its outer appearance. The colour symbolism he developed played an important role in this. Under the influence of Cubism he also greatly simplified the forms. As a result, his paintings tended more and more towards the abstract. His latest works clearly refer to the true expressive power of abstract expressionism.
