French Bulldog Brindle with text _HMS:Cynologists disagree about the history of the French Bulldog. The most likely is that the French Bulldog descends from the English Bulldog. The English bulldog is said to have been crossed with small French terriers, that's how the French bulldog got his standing ears. These small bulldogs, called Toy Bulldogs " were bred around Nottingham, England. They were popular with workers. Due to unemployment in England, many English workers settled in northwestern France in the 19th century; they took their Toy Bulldogs with them. The breed became immensely popular in southern French cities at the beginning of the 20th century. The French bulldog was used for fighting bulls in large bullrings. The breed was officially recognized in 1898, being the first in the United States.
