Description:
In this work, I wanted to capture the silhouette of a woman in profile: powerful and serene at the same time. Her skin catches the light in a way that emphasises her elegance, while the soft glow of a golden circle behind her head gives almost a sacred aura. I deliberately chose the large round earring as a symbol -for me, she represents the full moon, a sign of feminine power and mystery. I kept her clothes simple but refined, enriched with a subtle pattern referring to African fabrics and traditions. For me, the small kintsugi-like cracks in the background tell the story that beauty is not in perfection, but in recovery and strength after breakage.
My inspiration comes from the idea of legacy and passed-down strength: how women have carried culture, love and resilience for generations. This portrait is my ode to silence that speaks, to simplicity that carries richness, and to vulnerability that is powerful at the same time.
A special moment in this process was when this work was chosen from more than 2,700 international submissions to be exhibited at the Mauritshuis. Out of 60 selected works, my interpretation was also allowed to hang there an experience I consider a great honour and recognition.
For me, the atmosphere of this work is warm and meditative, almost timeless. I want it to evoke feelings of tranquillity, dignity and connection with something deeper. In an interior, this work exudes class and depth; as if a piece of wisdom and quiet strength is always present.
