A mill is an implement with a rotating mechanism and a drive, which can be used to grind, press or pound grains, paint pigments and other raw materials, saw wood, pump water, hoist a load or generate electricity. A mill can be powered by wind (windmill), water (water mill), the muscle power of people (hand mill, treadmill) and animals (horse mill) or by a motor. The first windmills appeared around the year 1000 in north-western France, Flanders and southern England. Essentially, these were water mills placed on a central post with the wheel replaced by blades. The last examples of the "inverted mill" were probably lost around 1930 and left almost no trace. An old photograph taken in Russia shows a group of these mills, the rightmost of which is the original shape. It can clearly be seen that the shaft is horizontal and quite low in the case. So this means that - just like a water mill - the grinding stones were driven from below.
