The Porsche 356 from 1964 is the progenitor of the popular Porsche 911 today. It is also the most successful model of the original Porsche roadster. Created in the same factory as the Porsche 912 model that set the benchmark for sports cars, the Porsche 356 was designed to do much more. It featured air suspension and four-wheel drive, two inches wider than the 911 model, and a body style unlike any other model of the time. Because the Porsche 356 is the forerunner of the popular Porsche 911, why is the Porsche 356 an icon?

As mentioned, the Porsche 356 is a roadster, meaning it is built on a production line car and as such is optimized for speed rather than looks. The engineers and designers who created this car had to consider many factors while creating such a fast car. They had to decide how much power the car would need, what kind of suspension they wanted, and how big the engine had to be. Because the Porsche 356 had to race against sports cars such as the Mustang and Coupe, the engine size was also decided upon so that the engine would not have to work as hard.

Because the Porsche 356 was an extremely speedy car, it was also important to make sure that safety standards were met. The brakes were originally pneumatic, but they were later replaced with drums that are much more efficient and durable.
