The Porsche 917 was a car designed for very high (racing) speeds. The frame that consisted only of aluminium tubes weighed only 50kg. The engine, a 180° (flat) twelve-cylinder engine, initially had a capacity of 4.5 litres and produced 520 hp. Later, the displacement was increased to five litres, and in the 917k, the block - with the help of a turbocharger - produced as much as 1400 hp at 7800 rpm. The Porsche had an extremely light body of just 1.6 mm thick made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, although some models were also built from magnesium.
