Portoferraio Elba
Portoferraio is the capital of Elba. About half of the island's total population lives in Portoferraio. The town has about 12,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 47.5 square kilometres. Most people have their homes on a small hill surrounded on three sides by the sea.

Portoferraio was founded in about 1550 by the then Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo l de' Medici.
The dukes of Tuscany ruled the town until the 18th century. The city was then taken over by 3 countries; France, England and Austria. In 1814, it was handed over to Napoleon. He was exiled to this island. In the 19th century, this town became very important for the iron trade, hence the name Portoferraio, which literally means iron port.

In 1860, it officially became part of Italy. The town centre is densely populated and has a number of interesting sights, such as:

Forte Stella, this is a fortress built on a hill. The location was high so you could have a good view if the enemy approached. The fort has a view of the entire bay and is located in the north of the city. Forte Stella was built in 1548.

Forte Falcone, this fort along with Fort Stella was one of the island's defensive forts, entrance to the fort costs 3 euros per person. Like Forte Stella, this fort was built in 1548. It is located on Portoferraio's highest hill. The fort is usually open from 10am-8pm.

Forte Inglese, this fort was built in 1700. Forte Inglese has a long and fascinating history.
Napoleon's house. This is one of Elba's most famous structures.

Portoferraio is a tourist town with many restaurants and souvenir shops. You can explore the town in the afternoon and enjoy beautiful Elba on a sea-view terrace in the evening.
