During the romeria, a kind of pilgrimage, hundreds of horses and decorated carts cross the river Guadalquivir from Sanlucar de Barameda to the natural park of La Doñana and from there, in three days, they travel to the small village of El Rocio in the province of Huelva where the Virgin Rocio is venerated during a three-day festival. The horsemen and the decorated carts have crossed the river by ferry and are on their way to El Rocio . The otherwise almost deserted village of El Rocio attracts almost a million visitors in the week before Pentecost and is then home to about 4,000 horses, mules and oxen.
