London's impressive Tower Bridge at night. Tower Bridge is a bridge over the River Thames in London, completed in 1894. The bridge is a tourist attraction. It is located next to the Tower of London, from which it also takes its name. The section between the two towers is a bascule bridge that can be opened for shipping. Two suspension bridges connect the central section to the banks. Two footbridges, 44 metres above the water, connect the towers and provide a counterforce to the suspension bridges. Construction was started in 1886 and took eight years. 432 workers went to work for it. Two massive abutments, with more than 70 000 tonnes of concrete, were set into the river bottom to support the structure. More than 11 000 tonnes of steel were needed for the skeleton of the towers and walkways.
