Under the glass roof

by Rene van Dam

This black-and-white photograph offers an impressive view of a large railway station, where architecture and movement come together in a harmonious whole. The imposing glass roof forms the central element of the image and immediately catches the eye. The symmetrical lines of the structure guide the eye towards the centre, where the platforms and tracks converge in a powerful perspective.

Light filters through the glass roof into the interior, creating a play of lines and shadows on the floor. This produces an almost graphic pattern that brings calm and structure to the space. The combination of steel, glass and brick gives the station a distinctive and timeless appearance.

Scattered across the platform, people move in different directions. Some are waiting, others are on their way — each with their own destination. These human elements add scale and life to the large, open space, without disturbing the tranquillity of the scene.

The black-and-white treatment emphasises the shapes, contrasts and architectural details, drawing the eye entirely to the lines and the light.
This photograph shows how a place of constant movement can also radiate a sense of order and balance.
