The VW Golf I laid the foundation for the so-called compact class and was built from 1974 to 1983. It was the direct successor to the VW Beetle, which was also built in Germany until 1985. At the same time, the Golf I led the VW Group out of a deep crisis at the time with over 6 million cars built, over 1 million of them with diesel engines.
The smallest engine in the Golf I was equipped with 50 hp, the Golf GTI with 110 hp. They were also very economical at 6.4 litres/100 km. The kerb weight was 750 kg, almost unbelievable today!
