The Adige flows through Verona. There are many bridges over this river, such as Ponte Catena, Ponte Risorgimento, Ponte Scaligero, Ponte Vittoria, Ponte Garibaldi, Ponte Nuovo, Ponte Navi and Ponte Aleardi.
Much transport of goods passes through Verona, due to its favorable location in relation to Central Europe, on the Brennerweg.
Already in Roman times the city was important, possibly it was already under Etruscan influence. The Romans used Verona as a base for their campaigns to the north, across the Alps. After Rome Verona has the most buildings from the Roman period. In 1239 the city flooded, after which it was rebuilt.
