When the sea calms down | Tellaro, Liguria

by Kilometer 120 | René Metzinger

Here, Tellaro is seen just before the end of the day. The houses and the Church of San Giorgio are bathed in the warm evening light, whilst to the right, the Ligurian Sea stretches out to the horizon. An unusually dense cloud formation stretches along the coast, against which the last warm patches of light from the sunset are visible. The scene was photographed using a long exposure at ISO 100 with the aperture closed. This gives the water its characteristic soft movement without making it completely smooth. Particularly in the foreground, bright lines of flow emerge between the dark rocks, revealing the path of the water and drawing the eye into the image. At the same time, the fine textures of the rocks and the historic houses are preserved. The contrast between the churning surf, the calm water’s surface and the textured sky defines the atmosphere of the photograph.

Thanks to its wide format, the coastal landscape makes a particularly striking impression on larger wall surfaces. Hanging above a sofa, a sideboard or a dining table, the open sea is given ample space, making the room appear more spacious. The numerous details in the rocks, the house façades and the water are shown to their best advantage, particularly in a large-format print.
