One of the most important rivers in the Netherlands is the Maas. For the city of Rotterdam the river is even more important, because it provides the distinctive image of the city, but especially the port of Rotterdam that provides employment and the largest source of income of the city and the country is enormously important. The city owes all this to one of the largest rivers in the Netherlands, the Maas. The Meuse runs for 950 kilometers through Western Europe, originating in Langres, France, until it empties into the North Sea near Rotterdam.
