Kim's historic canal house

This week we're taking a look at Kim's place. She adores interior design! When she viewed her house in Medemblik, the Netherlands, for the first time, it was clear that it needed a lot of love and attention, but Kim felt an immediate click and couldn't wait to renovate her dream house. Kim loves a mix of mid-century modern and eclectic and often uses this in her interiors. We're obsessed, how about you?

Dream house by the marina

"The old port house from 1650 looked dark and the layout was far from ideal and there were plasterboards between the beams. However, the 3m-high ceilings were impressive. The house is really distinctive and we thought it would be awesome to combine the period elements with modern elements," answers Kim with a smile. Kim and her boyfriend Richard converted the whole house: demolishing walls, upgrading the electrics and modernising the kitchen. Kim is particularly fond of the kitchen: "We extended this by 50cm and installed big, glass panels, which let a lot of light into the kitchen and give us unrestricted views of the outside. The window frames are built into the walls, which creates maximum transparency from floor to ceiling." Kim also can't get enough of her kitchen, which she fitted with walnut fronts and a terrazzo countertop. According to her, this combines wonderfully with all the colours in the interior, while still creating a calm atmosphere.

Her interior design inspiration

Kim's style is mainly a mix of mid-century modern and eclectic because this means she doesn't have to choose just one specific style. She picks the most beautiful elements from these various styles and this means she never gets bored. Kim loves combining classic with modern, old with new and rugged with feminine. You see these different elements reflected across her house. "I think it's awesome to seek out contrasts and I love mixing different materials and styles: like a really soft rug with a modern sofa and a shiny mirrored cabinet alongside a wooden 1920s sideboard." Kim also thinks you can't forget colour and she prefers quality pieces, for example a designer item or something eye-catching like a bright yellow vase. "It's a mix of things you wouldn't necessarily put together right away, but with an eclectic style it's all good! Kim mainly gets her inspiration from spending a lot of time on Instagram and Pinterest, but she also gets inspiration from hotels and restaurants. "I'll walk in a place to see it 'for real' and then I'll try to apply that luxurious and chic vibe to my own home."

Mixed media contrasting colours

Kim likes fashion and patterns, which is very much reflected in the piece "mixed media art print with abstract African patterns in black and white" by Renske. She loved it right away. Kim went for a modern, thin aluminium art frame as a base: "Again the modern piece creates a beautiful contrast against the beamed ceiling and you can switch out the canvas too, which is ideal!"
