Hi, I’m Karlijn. I’m an abstract artist from the Netherlands. I started painting during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to carve out some time for myself and to create freely. I chose abstract art because it gave me the freedom to experiment with materials and focus on the process.
My work is inspired by water and stones – in all their shapes, colours and textures.
Serendipity – a chance discovery – plays a major role in my practice. Using materials such as water, spray paint and acrylic ink, I consciously work with elements that cannot be fully controlled. It is precisely the unexpected outcomes that inspire me. And isn’t that what art is all about?
I often start with something that moves me – the colour blue, a silvery glint on the river in front of my house, a muddy trail or a chance splash – and from there I slowly build up the work.
The result: tangible, glossy and tranquil works of art, almost always with a touch of blue.
