I am Maaike Anne Maria, a creative artist born in 1985. My work bears the name of my baptismal names and I am proud of the meaning they have in my life.
One person who greatly inspires me is Mary Magdalene. Her strength, love and eventful life touch me deeply. I study and read a lot about her, and feel connected to her energy in these modern times. In my paintings, I often reflect her themes and depict her in different guises.
My style of painting is iconic. I try to capture emotions and feelings in a look. This process includes painting itself, observing, distancing and then painting again. I also enjoy creating abstract work.
Creativity has played a big role in my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was always cutting, pasting and colouring, time flew by while I was busy. Despite growing up in a small conditioned farming village, after secondary school I obtained my Pabo degree and taught in primary schools. But again and again, I felt the urge to paint - the expression, the will and the passion were indispensable to me. Over the years, I helped my husband with his various businesses, including our Rust Theatre company; all sorts of tasks filled my days. But the urge to paint always remained.
