After years of working with traditional painting techniques—mainly creating photorealistic and surrealistic works in oil paint—I have spent the past ten years focusing on creating surreal experiences in VR, essentially painting and sculpting in virtual reality. In recent years, I’ve increasingly incorporated AI, which I use to generate textures and 3D models. From these, I now create screenshots that I transform back into tangible 2D artworks using a laser cutter and 3D printer—such as dioramas and “paintings” composed of multiple cut-out layers. What you see in my paintings can often also be experienced in a VR environment, which you can explore with a VR headset to completely drift away into surreal, three-dimensional worlds.
The works available on Werk aan de Muur are, of course, all in two dimensions, but they are often derived from the VR worlds I create.
