A boxer engine is an internal combustion engine with the cylinder pairs positioned (almost) straight opposite each other. This means that the engine block is less high. This lowers the centre of gravity of a vehicle, which has a positive effect on the driving characteristics. Another advantage is that the engine is perfectly balanced, because the forces of opposing pistons cancel each other out.
