On 12 January 1807 the Leiden gunpowder disaster took place, in which about 150 citizens lost their lives. King Louis Napoleon personally visited the city to coordinate aid to the victims. At the site of the ruin caused by the explosion, the Van der Werfpark and the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory were later built.
