A Witches’ Sabbath - Cornelis Saftleven by Accessible Art

Cornelis Saftleven, a renowned artist of the Dutch Golden Age, created this eerie oil painting that is a master class in the fantastical and the macabre. Saftleven portrays a chaotic and terrifying assembly known as a witches' sabbath, drawing inspiration from the visionary traditions of older Flemish masters. A central fire and a few lamps cast an eerie glow across the vast, black area where the drama is located.
The composition is filled with hooded individuals, animal-human hybrids, and grotesque animals performing a variety of black sorcery and occult rites.
To convey a sense of impending doom, the artist employs a dismal palette of deep browns, murky greens, and blazing ambers.
In the background, figures can be seen ascending through the gloom on broomsticks, while the foreground is cluttered with symbolic objects like skulls, cauldrons, and ancient manuscripts. Saftleven's meticulous brushstrokes combine folklore with a moralizing satire of human foolishness to give the grotesque shapes a sense of unsettling realism.
With a dramatic use of light and shadow that highlights the occult mystery, this piece is a terrifying investigation of the paranormal and the seventeenth-century preoccupation with the demonic.
