A pen drawing with Indian ink and nib pen of a long-eared owl. The bird is coloured in with watercolor. He looks at you brightly with his orange eyes. The bird itself is brown with spots a pattern that makes a beautiful camouflage. Long-eared owls, when resting during the day, are completely absorbed in the trunk of the tree making them virtually invisible. The owl sits on a thick sloping branch. The background is a blotchy blue with watercolour with spots created by putting grains of salt on the wet paint. This has created an interesting texture.
Particularly striking about the appearance of the long-eared owl are its long ear tufts, which, incidentally, are not real ears. Its scientific name, Asio otus, means 'ear owl'.
The long-eared owl is a relatively large owl, found throughout Europe with the exception of Iceland.
Like most owls, the long-eared owl is mostly active after dark. The long-eared owl hunts rodents and resting birds.
