A peaceful walk through the watery landscape

by Patrick Wittling

A light-coloured wooden footbridge leads from the bottom edge of the picture into a vast landscape of shallow water, grasses and low shrubs. Its gentle change of direction draws the eye towards a bend in the distance. A vast sky, streaked with grey clouds, stretches out above the low vegetation. A subtle, warm streak of light shimmers on the horizon.

The individual wooden planks are clearly distinguishable, with their grain, knotholes and slight irregularities. This tangible texture forms a charming contrast to the smooth water, in which clouds and plants are reflected. Small, overgrown islands break up the expanse of water. The jetty’s side edges run through the scene, giving the open landscape a clear sense of direction.

The scene conveys a sense of serenity and the feeling of gradually distancing oneself from everyday life. The path disappears round a bend, leaving it open as to what lies beyond. This holds a gentle invitation to continue on with curiosity whilst, at the same time, being fully present in the moment.

With its muted shades of sand, brown and grey, the picture brings a calm, natural atmosphere to the room. It harmonises with wood, linen and simple furnishings, offering the eye a place to linger.
