A wide view opens up on the ascent to Steineberg, 1683 metres, in the Hochgrat range of the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. The narrow path through mountain meadows is still underfoot, but the grand panorama is already before your eyes: Immenstadt spreads across the valley like a mosaic of red roofs and white façades. The Illertal valley stretches between green hills and dark forest islands, criss-crossed by the glistening River Iller, which winds its way through the landscape in gentle curves.
The Allgäu Alps show their mild face here - no rugged peaks, but softly curving heights whose forests and pastures spread out in alternating colours. Groups of houses and fields nestle into the landscape, while the distance beckons with ever-changing shades of green and blue. There is an air of vastness over everything that lightens the breath and lightens the steps.
Looking down, you can see the connection between nature and culture: the old town that has developed over the centuries, embedded in a landscape that both supports it and towers above it. Up here, heaven and earth merge in a moment of clarity - a panorama that makes you feel at once at home and infinite.
