In the Achterhoek (Gelderland) near Gorsselen is the Gorsselse Heide. This former military training area is managed by the inhabitants of the area. Until the end of the 20th century, it was mainly used as a military training and shooting area. Now the area is publicly accessible and is known as one of the most important moors in the Achterhoek. All you can still see of its history is the old shooting range from where you have a beautiful view over the heathland.
The Gorsselse Heide is not a large area, but it is wonderfully quiet. You won't meet many people here. In the summer months, however, you may encounter a herd of Blonde d'Aquitaines (white cows) here. They help keep the heath open by eating the grass that grows between them.
On the moor is a fen. It is crowded on and in the water with animals. Skaters shoot across the water and frogs dive underwater. On a walk across the Gorsselse Heide, I take a break on the plank path. My legs dangle over the edge. The sun shines on my back and a gentle wind blows through my hair. This place exudes tranquillity.
