About the artwork

Aletsch Glacier in autumn.

The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps and is located in Switzerland, in the canton of Valais. This impressive glacier stretches for about 23 kilometres and covers an area of about 80 square kilometres. Located in the Bernese Oberland, the Aletsch Glacier is surrounded by high mountain peaks, including some of the most famous such as the Jungfrau, the Mönch and the Eiger.

It is a typical valley glacier, formed by the accumulation of snow that is compressed into ice over time. The Aletsch Glacier is fed by several side glaciers and is set in a breathtaking mountain landscape. Due to its impressive size and beauty, the Aletsch Glacier is a popular destination for tourists and mountaineers.

The area around the Aletsch Glacier has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its natural beauty and importance as one of the largest freshwater reserves in Europe. Unfortunately, like many other glaciers around the world, the Aletsch Glacier is undergoing significant retreat due to climate change and global warming.
