Menelaus, also known as Menelaus, is a figure from Greek mythology and was a king of Sparta.
He is one of the Atreids or sons of Atreus, and a brother of Agamemnon. From his father-in-law Tyndareos he had received by the hand of Helena, the fair one, also the kingship of Sparta.
So Menelaus had once been one of Helena's many suitors. There were so many suitors then, that Tyndareos feared war. But Ulysses, the cunning one, proposed to Tyndareos an oath that all suitors would swear, so that they would protect and help the man chosen by Helena as husband in times of need. Each suitor swore the oath and Helena chose Menelaus because he offered the most.
However, the marriage was short-lived, because one day she was chessed by the Trojan Prince Paris. Menelaus then called upon every ex-Father of Helena to fight in Troy, to undo this disgrace and to avenge his honour. This was the beginning of the Trojan War.
Here the naked king, like a Greek soldier, finds his wife, who is also naked. The army commander has apparently caused a massacre because there are corpses lying behind him.
Both legs, hips, torso, chest and tit are visible. The muscular bodies are rendered beautifully and full of emotion.
Alexander Theodor Rothaug (13 March 1870 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary; 5 March 1946) was an Austrian painter and illustrator.
