About ‘Also in the Drunense Dunes’ by Hans Janssen

The Loonse and Drunense Dunes are of course known for their sand dunes. Mention the area and everyone will think of that. But the Drunense Dunes is much more, as this photo shows. This pond is called the Boompjesven and is surprisingly large. The cows by the water make it a typically Dutch picture.

The Loonse and Drunense Dunes, located in North Brabant, are one of the largest areas of drifting sand in Western Europe. Part of National Park De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, this nature reserve covers about's 3,500 hectares and offers a unique landscape of vast sand plains, heaths, forests and fens.

The drifting sand in the Loonse en Drunense Duinen originated in the last ice age, when the wind had free rein to form sand dunes. Today, these drifting sands provide a special ecosystem in which rare plants and animals live, such as the sand lizard, certain species of mosses and lichens.
