The inner city of Amsterdam is located south of the river IJ. The oldest area of the city is the Red Light District, now famous as a prostitution area. Around the oldest core the canal belt developed in a crescent shape until the 17th century. The inner city has several protected townscapes: Within the Singelgracht and the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood.
Outside the historic centre and the Grachtengordel are the former working-class neighbourhoods of the Jordaan and the Eastern Islands, built in the 17th century, and the former working-class neighbourhoods of Spaarndammerbuurt, Staatsliedenbuurt, Kinkerbuurt, Pijp and Oost, built in the 19th century.
