Originally, the inspiration for this work came from a church in a village on Texel rather than a small Italian village in the mountains. Gradually it began to take more shape in this deathly quiet village that looks almost Italian, or Spanish. The church as the centre of the village stands abandoned, two single spectators as lonely visitors in the square.
It is a misty and mysterious haze that further obscures the village from the eye of a casual passer-by.
Personally, I love this kind of image, it makes me long for the unknown. What could lie beyond the church? Where does that state to the right of the tree lead?
