This image invites us to cross the threshold of the Chùa Chúc Thánh Buddhist temple, a historic jewel nestling in the town of Hội An, in Vietnam. The main entrance, built of stone and carved wood, displays a patina marked by time, a silent witness to centuries gone by. Inscriptions in Chinese characters, traditional symbols (such as the Buddhist swastikas, ancient signs of peace and eternity) and worn tiles create a decor charged with spirituality.
At the centre of the arch, a stone pathway leads the eye to a white statue of Buddha, set against an ornate wall. The verdant, well-tended garden frames the scene with bonsai trees and flower pots, adding to the serenity of the setting.
This temple, founded in the 17th century, is one of the oldest in Hội An and an important spiritual site for Buddhist practitioners in the region. It embodies the tranquillity, wisdom and continuity of Vietnamese traditions, while offering visitors a break from the modern hustle and bustle.
