About the artwork

a writer sits with pen near some books. an abstract work with a writer, poet at work.

A superb example of Zárraga's experiments with cubism, to which he devoted himself between 1915 and 1918. The identity of the model depicted in this portrait with "large bust" is unknown, and it recreates her immersed in the atmosphere that it belongs to him. The chair and table full of books, open and closed, with a sheet of paper and a written message are the appropriate setting to indicate the "profession" associated with it. There is a clear contrast between the material solidity of the objects in the foreground, which occupies the lower third of the composition, and the bluish transience of the female figure. This is reduced to a silhouette filled with flat colours and with its contours defined by solid lines; the lines demarcating her arms bend to indicate, in the body, the edges of the dress forming the neckline. Despite the model's strict impression of frontality, strict symmetry is broken at head height to suggest the coquettish irregularity of the hairstyle or headdress.

Angel Zarraga (y) Argüelles (16 August 1886 in Victoria de Durango - 22 September 1946) was a Mexican painter. He was one of the founders of the cultural organisation El Ateneo de la Juventud.
