Just over the border near Megchelen in the Achterhoek region is the beautiful Castle and Water Castle Anholt in Isselburg. Built before 1169, this castle is currently a museum and castle and privately occupied. The moated castle is surrounded by 35 hectares of beautiful castle park. Right next to the historic landscape park is a golf course and the wildlife park the Anholter Schweiz. To this day, the Anholt water castle is one of the few buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia that are still in private hands, but can be toured on a guided tour. Visitors get an insight into the representative salons, private quarters and the house's 1,000-year history. The art to be discovered still testifies to the family's collecting frenzy, be it porcelain, Baroque furniture, glass, coins, weapons or the historic book collection. Precious works from the extensive painting collection are by Rembrandt, Terborch and Van Goyen. Anholt, a piece of Dutch Golden Age in the Westphalian country.
