About the artwork

Jan Luyken, 1682

An ommegang was originally a religious procession in the Southern Netherlands. The name originally means "(going round) [the church or the city] "; it concerned the veneration of a saint. The Ommegang in Antwerp originated in the 14th century and is held on 15 August. Two Ommegang processions were held each year in Antwerp:

The Ommegang in Antwerp by Alexander van Bredael
The Sinksenommegang ": held on Whit Sunday
The Our Lady's Ommegang, held on the first Sunday after the Assumption (15 August).
In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the Ommegang of Antwerp was the most important in Flanders. The Onze Lieve Vrouwommegang originally consisted of two events: the first celebrated the religious feast of the Assumption of Mary.
The second was a large, sumptuous secular participation of the guilds, craftsmen and chambers of chivalry, each of which contributed a float to a procession through the streets of Antwerp. Some floats contained references to events of the previous year. There was considerable rivalry between the guilds in their attempts to provide the most magnificent display.

Jan Luyken or Johannes Luiken (Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands, 16 April 1649 - Amsterdam, 5 April 1712) was a poet, painter and etcher of the 17th century.
