About the artwork

In the dark of night under a bright full moon, people run across a pier with a windmill in the background.

On 21 October 1836, Eckersberg wrote in his diary: "This morning in Langebro, to make a sketch of it. [...] After that: to Toldboden, and to Langebro to see the moon." (Eckersberg's diaries, 2008, p. 709). On 10 November, he noted in the diary: "Edited and completed a small painting with a moonlit evening, full moon. The motif is Langebro with some running figures." (ibid., p. 711). The painting and its title inspired author Bjarne Reuter for the book "Langebro med krunning figurer" (1997).

Daniel Herman Anton Melbye (Copenhagen, 13 February 1818 - Paris, 10 January 1875) was a Danish painter and photographer who specialised in maritime scenes.

His paintings are realistic, often complemented by dramatic lighting and weather effects (he was especially fond of depicting bad weather).
