About ‘Aoraki / Mount Cook’ by Anneke Hooijer

Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is located on New Zealand's South Island, about a two-hour drive from the village near Lake Tekapo. The Maori call Mount Cook 'Aoraki', meaning 'cloud picker'. Mount Cook is also the heart of the national park, and at 3724 metres, it is the highest mountain on New Zealand's South Island.
The park is 722 square kilometres in size with as many as 23 peaks above 3,000 metres. The national park is also home to eight of New Zealand's 12 largest glaciers, including the largest: Tasman Glacier. These glaciers cover 40 per cent of Mount Cook National Park's area. A third of the total area is made up of permanent snow and ice. The park is also part of Te Waipounamu - South Westland World Heritage Area.
