Architecture as an art form, symmetry, lines and surfaces form a whole. According to the earliest surviving work on the subject, "About architecture" by the Roman Vitruvius, architecture is based on three principles: beauty (venustas), solidity (firmitas) and usability (utilitas). It can then be described as the balance between these three elements, with none of them dominating the other two.
