About "Arts et Métiers"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

In the Arts et Métiers metro station in Paris, you feel like you've been transported into the inner workings of a fantastic machine. This artistically designed station, created by Belgian artist François Schuiten, pays homage to the works of Jules Verne and the technical wonders of the 19th century. When you step onto the platform, you are immediately captivated by the unique atmosphere. The walls and ceilings are completely clad in copper-coloured panels, giving the impression of being inside a gigantic steampunk submarine.
Rivets and portholes can be seen all over the walls, emphasising the technical character of the station. These elements seem almost alive and tell of an era in which imagination knew no bounds. The portholes open up a view of fascinating scenes dominated by complex gears and mechanisms. Even the benches and lighting are embedded in the detailed design, so that every centimetre of the station seems to tell a story.
The panoramic shot of this extraordinary metro station captures the breathtaking harmony of art and technology. It shows the precise craftsmanship and visionary design that make Arts et Métiers a true treasure of the Parisian underground landscape. Here, past and future merge into a fascinating work of art that amazes every visitor and transforms the everyday journey on the metro into an unrivalled experience.
