Beautiful dark red Aronskelk, or a Zantedeschia.
The bulbs were bought in Lisse last spring and have bloomed beautifully in our front garden.
The arum has the Latin name Zantedeschia. This plant used to be wrongly named Richardia or Calla. The Calla still exists, and is also related to the arum.
Including stem, the inflorescence can reach a length of more than 1 m. The inflorescence occupies a 12-26 cm long, white, funnel-shaped coiled bract (spatha) and a 6-8 cm long, pale yellow spadix (spadix). The flowers are very small and barely visible. Female flowers grow at the base of the spadix and male flowers above. The plant needs cross-pollination to give fruit. After fertilisation, round berry fruits are formed and are surrounded by the remains of the bract.
