About the artwork
The act of ascent carries its own rhythm—one that contrasts the gravitational pull of descent. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s dynamic fragmentation in Nude Descending a Staircase, I sought to reverse both the motion and the philosophy. Man Walking Up Stairs is a meditation on persistence and the human spirit striving towards higher planes, both literally and metaphorically.
Each stroke of motion in the figure is layered to evoke a sense of becoming, as if the man exists in a liminal space between effort and transformation. The repetition of his form overlaps chaotically yet ascends with resolve, symbolizing the fragmented nature of progress—disjointed but undeniably forward.
Unlike Duchamp’s cascade that conveys surrender to the inevitable, I inverted the movement to suggest defiance. The upward trajectory synchronizes with a bold, angular composition, using a limited, earthy palette to ground the surreal motion in the real world. The steep perspective forces an intimate confrontation with the climb, inviting viewers to share the subject’s labor.
This reinterpretation reflects not just physical ascent but the inner struggle to rise above life's challenges. Through movement and perspective, the painting seeks to capture a moment of perpetual becoming—a universal story disguised in a single, deliberate act.
