This photo is part of my "In the Spotlight" series. With this series I literally put animals in the spotlight to make us aware again of what nature has to offer in terms of beauty and specialness, and to cherish this.
I would like to inspire people. To bring nature and wildlife closer to people with the message to cherish it. Animals and nature have no voice. By portraying them, and thus arousing a feeling in people, I hope to give animals a voice and make people realize what beauty the world has to offer and that we must ensure that this continues to exist.
I took this photo in Thailand. The elephant in the photo is Malee, an elephant who lives in a hands-off elephant sanctuary. I helped set up this shelter in 2019. Malee is an old lady in her 60s. She has had a hard life in the tourist industry. She worked in logging until she got a heavy tree trunk against her leg which broke her leg.
